AMA bans political debates

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has with immediate effect ban every political debate in all the 13 constituencies under its jurisdiction.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting by the Accra Metropolitan Security Committee (METSEC) on Friday November 11, 2016 to assess the security situation in the area.

This resolution by the committee was aimed at stemming the worrying political disturbances within the metropolis in the runup to the December 7 general elections. “In light of the recent upheavals, METSEC has directed the immediate suspension of Parliamentary political debates being organized by the NCCE in all thirteen (13) constituencies in the Accra metropolis,” the committee said a 6-point resolution contained in a press statement.

The police, it said, have duly been notified to enforce this directive as well as other laws to ensure “peace, protection of lives and property”.

The statement called for active involvement of the AMA’s Inter-party Dialogue Committee in the education, sensitization and engagement of the various political parties.

It also recommended strongly that all political parties must always submit their activities/programmes to the District Electoral Taskforces through their Local Police Command and give copies to the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee. “METSEC appeals to all political parties and members of the general public to desist from any activity that would disturb the public peace,” the statement signed by Sam Ayeh-Datey Metro Co-Ordinating Director for the Metro Chief Executive said.
