ATU debate society set to compete at PAUDC 2024 in Uganda

Accra Technical University (ATU) Debate Society is poised to showcase its talent on the continental stage as it prepares to participate in the 14th Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) 2024. This prestigious tournament will be held at Kyambogo University in Kampala, Uganda, from December 15th to December 22nd, 2024.

The team representing ATU at PAUDC 2024 includes experienced coach Mr. Michael Appiah Asamoah Koranteng, along with debaters Chelsea Makafui De Souza, Deborah Abena Tettey, Kelvin Kaku Azebiah, Kelvin Asare Tei, and Joshua Tetteh. Their participation is a significant step forward for the university, as the team aims to make a strong impression at Africa's premier debate championship.

Building Momentum: Success at the Ghana Universities Debate Championship
This announcement follows the society's remarkable achievements at the 2024 Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC) held at the University of Cape Coast from September 16th to 20th. The ATU Debate Society, with an all-new team of first-time participants, made history by winning six medals and breaking several records:

Medals Won:

1. 5th Best Judge (Public Speaking): Richmond Roberts

2. 5th Best Speaker (Public Speaking): Deborah Abena Tettey

3. 4th Best Judge (Public Speaking): Osborn Antwi

4. 2nd Best Judge (Public Speaking): Joshua Tetteh

5. 4th Best New Judge (Debate): Chelsea Makafui De Souza

6. 10th Best Open Judge (Debate): Richmond Roberts

Notable Records:

• First-time Public Speaking Finals appearance at the national level, competing against top universities such as UG, KNUST, and UCC.

• Four out of five judges and three out of four public speakers advanced to the break rounds—a first for ATU at GUDC.

• 95% of debate judges representing ATU broke into advanced rounds, an exceptional achievement for first-time participants.

These accomplishments highlight the resilience and potential of the ATU Debate Society.

Speaking ahead of the PAUDC 2024, Mr. Michael Appiah Asamoah Koranteng, coach of the ATU Debate Society, expressed his pride in the team’s growth and gratitude to university management.

“Our success at GUDC 2024 demonstrated the incredible talent and determination of our students. I am confident that the team representing us at PAUDC 2024 will make us proud. We are grateful to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi; the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Charles Allotey; the Secretary to the DOSA, Ms. Bridget Oduro; and all members of the University Management for their unwavering support. Their belief in us fuels our passion and commitment,” he said.
