A national NASARA Coordinator hopeful of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abdul Aziz Haruna Futa hopes to follow the steps President Nana Akufo-Addo and ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor who used their experience as a sports people to become successful politicians.
The former management member of Accra Hearts of Oak has become a subject of attacks from his opponents who claim that aside from his experience as a football administrator, Aziz has nothing else to offer the party.
However in an interview with the press after submitting his forms at the headquarters of the party on Tuesday, 15th May, 2018, Aziz Haruna described the allegations as frivolous and calculated attempts by his opponents to belittle his capabilities.
Aziz believes that like President Akufo-Addo who was a boxer and golfer at the early stages of his life and former President John Agyekum Kufuor who once headed Kotoko’s board, he has garnered enough knowledge to make him an accomplished politician.
Aziz Haruna, who describes himself as "a true son of the Zongos" made mention of some the policies and plans he has for the Zongo communities in the country which he asserts will make the party gain the love and trust of the Zongo people.
"I thank God for giving me the strength to see this day and be able to submit my forms. I want to congratulate my opponents for giving me competition because I love competition and it has been part of my life. Everybody knows me as a humble and hardworking person. My capabilities as an organizer cannot be underestimated. I was born as an organizer and my works are there for everyone to see"
He added that "I deserve to be the NASARA Coordinator because I have policies that will benefit the party greatly in the Zongos. I'm coming into this race as a true son of this party and as an astute football person. My mission is to build a powerful NASARA that is recognized beyond the Zongos. I want to build a NASARA club that will become an election-winning machinery for the party. I have been through almost all NASARA clubs in the country and I have seen the poor nature of things so I want to change things and improve the conditions".
“My critics are afraid of me that's why they are saying I have nothing to offer aside sports. President Akufo-Addo is a sportsman. He was an amateur boxer and a golfer. He is a staunch Kotoko fan. Former President Kufuor was a board chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Osaafo Maafo was a board member of Asante Kotoko so what are they saying. Football and politics work hand-in-hand so disregard them".
Aziz concluded his speech by wishing his fellow Muslims particularly NASARA coordinators in the country as well as they begin the holy month of Ramadan.
“I want to wish every Muslim a happy and successful Ramadan particularly to my fellow my NPP members and NASARA coordinators. Let's use this period to pray for our party and the country”
Vetting of the aspirants begins on Thursday, May 17 and is expected to end on Friday, May 25, 2018.
The NPP’s National Delegates Conference is scheduled to take place at the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua on July 7, 2018.
