The Member of Parliament for the Madina Constuitency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has defended one of the leaders of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, regarding the recent incident where he took the ignition keys of a police vehicle during a 3-day protest against illegal mining activities in the country.

In an interview on Neat FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, October 7, 2024, Xavier-Sosu questioned the legal implications of Barker-Vormawor's actions, stating, "What law has Barker-Vormawor broken by taking the ignition keys of a police vehicle during the protest?

"For instance, if he took a police weapon, that would have constituted an offense. We need to properly contextualise the issue. What happened after he took the keys? Did the police not find the keys after the incident?" he quizzed.

Barker-Vormawor, who has been denied bail by an Accra High Court, is one of 53 persons charged with multiple counts of conspiracy, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, assault on public officer, and defacement of public property.

These charges follow a recent three-day protest aimed at drawing attention to the negative impact of illegal mining activities, urging swift intervention from the government.
