Aburi-Nsawam road project terminated for non performance

Accra, May 27, GNA - Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, on Friday said the contract to upgrade the 26km Aburi-Nsawam road has been terminated for non performance of the contractor.

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) abrogated the contract in October 2010.

He was speaking during question time in parliament in Accra. According to the Minister the contractor was to upgrade and improve the 10km bitumen surface of the road and the 16km gravel.

Currently, the GHA in its 2010/2011 routine maintenance programme had graded and spot re-gravelled the first 16km gravel section to keep the road motorable.

He indicated that potholes and bad sections within the bitumen section had been earmarked for patching under the GHA 2011 potholes patching programme.

He said the GHA had repackaged works on the 16km gravel for upgrading to be considered, under the 2012 budget, however, subject to availability of funds.

On the Brekuso-Kitase roads he said the road had experienced extensive traffic due to the sprawling of estates around the road corridor leading to the rapid deterioration.

He said procurement process and the designing of the road had been completed and the contractor was yet to be issued with order to commence work.

Mr Gidisu said the 5.9km Aburi-Adamrobe feeder road located in the Akuapim South Municipality of the Eastern Region was awarded in 2005 but was terminated in April 2010 due to non performance of the contractor but stated that the outstanding work was being repackaged for re-award.
