Academic Community And Santaclausians Lose A Great Patriot

Dr. John Hodiak Addai-Sundiata, affectionately known as Chimborazo, died on Sunday, 3rd October 2004 in Accra. He was 62.

Dr. Addai-Sundiata was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Coast. After completing his post-Doctoral programme and research on Decentralized Societies, Governance and Viable Economic Communities, at his Alma Mater, University of Heidelberg, Germany, he was faced with the challenge of deciding on various lucrative professional offers placed before him in Europe and the USA. He worked and lectured briefly in Germany and then to the shock of his academic colleagues and friends, Addai-Sundiata, also known as Addai-Gyata, decided instead to return to Ghana in 1982 to contribute to the intellectual preparation of the youth for the future safety and development of Ghana. He therefore took academic residence at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Cape Coast and applied himself diligently to his set mission, and right until he took his last breath. Like his colleagues, who against all odds decided to cast their lot in Ghana, his life has been an unstinting sacrifice - instructing and shaping the minds of their students as future productive leaders of their beloved Ghana.

On Wednesday, 10th November 2004, between 4pm and 11 pm, Addai-Sundiata would be laid in state, followed by a full memorial service officiated by His Grace, the Anglican Bishop of Cape Coast with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast attending, at the University Auditorium. The occasion is to enable his former and present students, colleagues, friends, associates and the general public to join the family in celebrating his life as an exemplary leader, sportsman, playwright, academic, teacher and a patriot. His body will be conveyed the following morning of Thursday, 11th November 2004, to Kwabere-Swedru, near Adwumakase-Kese, Ashanti, for burial.

Addai-Sundiata was the elder brother of Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, a Peace Envoy and an Independent Consultant on National Interest and Security. Addai-Sebo is also a journalist and multi-media broadcast communication campaign expert. In the mid-1960s Addai-Sundiata worked briefly with Radio Ghana, Accra, as a presenter on a hit Saturday musical show. Addai-Sundiata attended Adisadel College and was a member of the 1961 Old Santaclausians Year Group.
