Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that an alleged attempt by activists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ellembelle Constituency of the Western Region to transport NDC supporters from Ankobra to Asanta in the constituency to give the Vice President, Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur a rousing welcome, nearly turned tragic when an NDC activist got involved in an accident.
The vice president is currently on a three-day official visit to the Western Region to introduce himself to the chiefs and people of the area ahead of the December 7 polls.
This is the first time the vice president is visiting the region since assuming office, following the elevation of then Vice President John Mahama to the highest office of the land as a result of the death of President John Atta Mills on July 24, 2012.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the accident occurred when a private saloon car being driven by one Joseph Meneaba Akpo, Ellembelle Constituency secretary of the NDC, from Ankobra to Asanta, collided head-on with a motorbike.
Akpo was alleged to have gone to pick some supporters of the party at Ankobra and Bobrama to Asanta, the hometown of Mr. Amissah-Arthur’s wife, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, to give the vice president a rousing welcome on his arrival in the area.
The paper learnt that the accident occurred at a junction around the Asanta Catholic School.
Akpo was not injured. However, the motorbike rider, whose name was not immediately known, sustained severe injuries and was admitted at the Eikwe hospital in the district.
On his arrival at Asanta, the vice president called on the chief of the area, Nana Akpo Kpainyili IV. He told the chief and people that since his wife was a native of the area, he was there to officially introduce himself to his wife’s family and seek their blessings as he toured the region.
The chief congratulated the former governor of the Bank of Ghana on his new position as the vice president of Ghana and assured Amissah-Arthur that the people of Asanta were solidly behind him.
Mrs. Amissah-Arthur bemoaned the menace of politics of insult that had reared its ugly head in the country’s politics recently and prevailed on the NDC supporters to embark an on insult-free campaign.
From Asanta, the vice president and his entourage visited Half-Assini, Esiama, Aiyinase, Axim and Agona-Nkwanta in the Ahanta West District.
Vice President Amissah-Arthur had earlier paid a courtesy call on Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, Paramount Chief of Essikado and some religious leaders in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
