The Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey has described the washing away of the newly constructed railway by the heavy downpour was "an act of God”.

Reacting to the story, the minister, refuted claims that a shoddy work was done on the railway.

Portions of the railway line recently laid by the Ghana Railway Company Limited was washed off its tracks by the floodwaters that resulted from the rainstorm that occurred in parts of Accra in the late hours of Monday, June 9, 2020.

Some Ghanaians have slammed the Railway Company for doing a "shoddy work”.

"I don’t think a shoddy work was done. The work was done by the Ghana Railway Company. As I said, the rail is not new. I don’t think a shoddy work was done. The Ghana Railway Company has done great jobs in the past so I don’t think a shoddy was done.”

But Mr. Ghartey told Kwabena Agyapong the railway line is not new but a colonial line built in 1911 that was rehabilitated.

The Minister explained that in the bid to revive its operations, the Ghana Railway Company Limited had in the last year embarked on a campaign to rehabilitated rails across the country.

"This was a natural disaster. It is an act of God. The rains were not normal and affected the rail. But the response from Ghana Railway Company was impressive.”
