ActionAid rewards loyal community volunteers

ActionAid Ghana and its partner Songtaba, both non-governmental organisations, have rewarded community members who assisted in the successful implementation of projects in the Nanumba communities.

Seventy packets of roofing sheets, wax prints, bicycles and other valuables were presented to the volunteers drawn from 15 communities of Nanumba North and South districts.

Madam Esther Boateng, Northern Region Programmes Manager of ActionAid Ghana (AAG), said the people deserved to be acknowledged for the fruitful and selfless services they had rendered to the organisation since 2004 when it started implementing projects in both districts.

She said without the contributions of the community members, AAG’s efforts at reducing poverty, creating wealth and reducing injustices and violence against women would have been a mirage.

Madam Boateng said AAG would continue to empower women in order to create an enabling environment and opportunities for sustainable development.

She said the NGO would continue to roll out new projects to improve the lives of the people.

Madam Azumi Mesuna, Project Manager for Women’s Right to Sustainable Livelihood, AAG, said her outfit had started implementing a three-and-half-year project targeting rural women and small-holder farmers.

She said the sustainable livelihood project was targeting 3000 women and small-holder farmers in the Northern and Upper East regions to expand their production while 500 of them would be given livestock for rearing.

Alhaji Ibn-Abass, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nanumba North, in a speech read for him, commended AAG for its invaluable contributions toward the development of the area, a situation that had created livelihoods for many people.

He called on the youth and members of the community to rekindle their volunteerism spirit for community service and development.

Mrs Yussif Awulata, a volunteer, explained that even though the work was not easy, it was self-motivating and created an enabling environment for people to learn new ideas to enhance themselves.
