New Edibiase (Ash), May 11, GNA - The Adansi South District Assembly for the second time rejected Mr Opoku Ampofo Manu, the President's Nominee for the position of District Chief Executive, at its meeting held in New Edubiase on Sunday.
Mr Manu polled 30 votes with 21 against. Two ballot papers were rejected out of the total of 53 votes cast. He thus failed to obtain the mandatory two-thirds of the valid votes cast. During the first voting on April 30, 2009 Mr Manu got 32 votes with 21 against. Under the rules, President John Evans Atta Mills would have to nominate another person.
There was heavy security presence because word had gone round that some youths from New Edubiase intended to disrupt the Assembly's meeting because they wanted someone from their town and not Mr Manu, who hailed from Akrofuom. However, the election went on without any trouble. Addressing the Assembly members before the voting, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Kofi Opoku Manu appealed to them to confirm Mr Manu since it would take a long time for another person to be nominated. He said without a substantive DCE no meaningful development could take place and that would draw the area back. New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament for the two constituencies in the District, Mr Kwadwo Appiah-Pinkrah of Akrofuom and Mr Ernest Kofi Yakah for New Edubiase were present. 11 May 09
