The general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken the Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, to the cleaners describing his posture as arrogant.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie otherwise known as Sir John, told journalists in Accra on Tuesday that the EC boss is being adamant despite numerous calls on his outfit to extend the just ended biometric voter's register.
“It is for the EC to ensure that in his own interest and in the interest of the democracy and all Ghanaians, to extend the period. This is intransigent on the part of Afari-Gyan that I will not do this, I will not do that. This does not help the country. I don’t know why he has always been on a suicide mission as far as our democratic dispensation is concerned”, he sad.
Mr. Owusu Afriyie further mentioned that “there are genuine cases out there which is attributable to their own negligence, yet in spite of that, just extending it for a few days so that all these are corrected, he, I am told is adamant and insistent that he will not do that. So somebody must tell Afari-Gyan that his arrogance is becoming too much.”
Some political watchers have called on the EC to re-consider its stance regarding the extension of the just ended biometric voter’s register exhibition.
The 10-day exercise which ended on Monday, faced several challenges ranging from low turnout to missing registers in some parts of the country.
The EC has stated that the just ended exercise will not be extended nationwide.
It has however extended the exercise in some parts of the Ashanti Region, but some of the political parties insist that is not enough.
