The Africa Centre for Peace Building (Peace Centre) has launched a website to help the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Ghana.

The organisation said it has taken note of the devastating economic effect of the global panic on Ghanaians, especially the poor, the displaced and distressed families whose livelihoods largely depend on their daily movements.

“We have acknowledged the fact that one of the measures to stop community infection and transmission of the deadly novel coronavirus is social distancing, hence, the government of Ghana’s proactive step to impose a partial restriction on Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Kasoa.

“The partial lockdown also comes with its economic impact, especially on the poor, which goes a long way to threaten their peace,” a statement signed by Korsi Senyo, Executive Director, said.

It added: “To complement the efforts of the government to manage and or mitigate the economic effects of the lockdown on the lessprivileged, the Peace Centre, in partnership with URI West Africa-Nigeria, Senyo Global, AM Network and The Emmanuel Ivorgba Foundation-Nigeria have launched the Ghana COVID-19 Relief Support Project – ghanacovid19.org to help mobilise resources from home and abroad to support families who would have otherwise wanted to defy the social distancing orders in search for their daily bread and, or might have been hard hit by their continuous stay at home.

“The project, therefore, seeks to: Provide support (food, water, hand sanitisers, toiletries) to the aged, distressed and displaced families; partner with churches, mosques, private and public schools which may be willing to offer their facilities to house street children, head porters (Kayayei) and other displaced families during the lockdown period; provide support to frontline health workers with facemasks and hand sanitisers

“We, therefore, wish to appeal to the general public to contribute to this project through the donation of food items, water, hand sanitisers, toiletries among others.”
