The 13th African Land Forces Summit (ALFS) has been opened, with a call on all nations to deepen relationships of mutual benefits to help fight pressing security challenges.

The opening ceremony, slated from Monday April 7 to Thursday 9, 2025, is bringing together forty African nations and 11other nations from parts of the world to discuss, collaborate, connect and find lasting solutions to the ongoing insecurities among nations, especially Africa.

ALFS is an annual summit that brings together land force commanders from across Africa, other partner nations, academics, and other government leaders.

The US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are co-hosting the summit, which has been hosted previously in the United States (2010 & 2022), Uganda (2012), Senegal (2015), Tanzania (2016), Malawi (2017), Nigeria (2018), Botswana (2019), Ethiopia (2020), Cote d’Ivoire (2023), and Zambia (2024).

The theme for the summit is "Optimising Land Forces for The Emerging Security Environment."

Senior land force leaders from African nations will have the opportunity to build and strengthen relationships, exchange information on current topics of mutual interests, and encourage cooperation in addressing challenges.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Army Staff, Major-General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, said the summit will pave way for neighboring countries to meet and discuss about rising terrorism and ongoing threats in the security system.

He said the summit was timely as African countries continue to face terrorists attacks, adding that the leaders will engage in matters of mutual interest to help all nations discuss their researches on ongoing threats for possible resolutions.

“Let us engage in matters of mutual benefits to help fight terrorism collectively to safeguard national and regional securities” he added.

COAS Gbetanu said the summit offers a unique opportunity for military commanders to discuss defence and security, ensuring strategic deliberations and solutions, networking and collaboration.

He called on the leaders to be steadfast in their commitments to collaborate with African partners and allies to help avert the emerging security environments.
