Afrobarometer Report lacks consistency - Dr. Bossman Asare

Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC), has characterised the Afrobarometer report as lacking consistency.

In response to the Afrobarometer report published a few months prior, Dr. Bossman Asare said he is not concerned about its findings.

During an exclusive interview with Roland Walker on TV3, he noted that the Afrobarometer report presented a contrasting view of the EC in 2020.

“I am not troubled because the Afrobarometer report itself is quite inconsistent. The same report indicated in 2020 that a significant number of people believed the elections were conducted fairly. Are there really Ghanaians who have lost faith in the EC?” he inquired.

He raised doubts regarding the credibility of the Afrobarometer report, mentioning that the EC has a project involving researchers who assess the quality of elections globally.

Dr. Bossman highlighted that the research team’s report on Electoral Integrity for 2024 ranks Ghana’s EC and its quality at 70%, placing it fifth in the world.

It is worth noting that a few months ago, the Afrobarometer reports indicated a decline in public trust in the EC, which fell to 28% ahead of the 2024 elections.

The Afrobarometer poll revealed that public perception of the EC as corrupt is alarming.

Only 28% of respondents expressed trust in the EC despite its responsibility for conducting the elections on December 7 in a fair, impartial, and transparent manner.

This marks a significant decrease from the 59% trust rating recorded in 2012.

This year, public trust in the Commission has decreased to 28%, down from 33% in 2022.
