Agona District Assembly gives seed money for Agona East take-off

Agona Swedru (C/R), Feb. 28, GNA-The Agona District Assembly is to provide the newly created Agona East district Assembly an amount of GHc30.000 as seed money for its smooth take-off. The District Chief Executive, Mr. Ben Mensah said this at the last meeting of the Agona district Assembly at Agona Swedru on Wednesday where the assembly divided its members. Mr. Mensah said the Assembly has no debt to share between the two Assemblies and that they have "only assets to share administratively". Thirty-one members of the Assembly made up of 21 elected and 10 government Appointees formed the newly created Agona East, while 40 made up of 28 elected and 12 appointees would remain at Agona West that has been elevated to a municipality status. The Agona East District was carved from the Agona District. Mr. Mensah said the new Agona West Municipality has put in place a number of measures to enable them to improve further on their Internal Revenue Generation (IGF).

According to him the measures include compilation of revenue mobilization register of taxable ventures and that 487 supermarkets, used clothes, provision and soft drink shops, 288 dressmaking 154 hairdressing and 163 advertising billboards have been registered. He said last year, the Assembly exceeded its IGF by 114 percent and hoped to improve upon it this year. Mr. Mensah said the Assembly has been able to undertake a number of development projects, including the construction of classrooms and provision of health facilities to help improve education and health to the people. He said the achievements and successes of the Assembly have resulted in an improvement in the living standards of the people of the district, which is now seen as one of the urbanized towns in the country. The Presiding Members of the Assembly, Nana Osam Dodu said that there were a number of untapped opportunities and human resources in the newly created Agona East district yet to be tapped for the development of the area and urged members to work hard towards the rapid development of the area.
