Agona East NDC mourners involved in car crash

One person died and 18 others sustained various degrees of injuries when mourners from the Agona East branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were involved in an accident at the outskirt of Agona Swedru on Tuesday.

They were returning from Agona Swedru after attending the one-week commemoration of the death of President John Evans Atta Mills. The dead has been identified as Madam Efuah Abanoah, a 50-year-old woman from Agona Kwanyako, while the injured are yet to be identified.

According to a source from the Agona Swedru Government Hospital, Madam Abanoah died on arrival at the hospital, adding that one Mohammed Ali, a victim who was in a critical condition had been referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further treatment.

An Eye witness account told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Agona Swedru that the incident occurred when a Mahindra pick-up vehicle belonging to the Agona East branch of NDC, conveying supporters and other people to Agona Kwanyako was involved in the accident.

The eye witness attributed the accident to overloading of the vehicle, saying that, there were about 30 people on the vehicle registered for only four persons.

According to the eye witness, the driver lost control of the steering wheel and in the process veered off the road and somersaulted.

Meanwhile, Mr. Martin Luther Obeng, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Agona East, Mr. J.K. Abban, Agona East Chairman of NDC and Maame Pokua, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Agona East were at the Agona Swedru government hospital to offer assistance to victims.**
