Ahafo And Akyem Chiefs Appeal To Newmont

…For appropriate Royalties and compensation

The chief of Ntotroso Nana Kyereku Ampem II has appealed to Newmont Mining Corporation to pay appropriate royalties and compensation to the people who will loose properties in one way or the other. The call was made at a grand durbar held at Kenyasi No.2 to welcome the chairman and the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Wayne Murdy to the new mining town. The occasion saw all the paramount and divisional chiefs of Ahafo with representatives from Akyem in attendance.

According to Nana Kyereku, it has always been the dream of Nananom to have a company like Newmont to invest in the area so that the youth would get jobs. He added that whatever agreement reached in terms of social responsibilities to the mining communities should be put into writing, with copies deposited at the traditional councils.

In his response, the boss of the world’s largest gold mining industry said the company is committed to the safety and welfare of its workers. He added that Newmont believes its long-term success is tied to its neighbouring communities and would help with the community/environmental development. “Newmont is committed to employing the highest standards of environmental management. The company embraces the concept of multiple use of lands ,that is, the integrated, responsible use of land for mining ,agriculture, and other public and private purposes that strengthen and enhance the economic viability of the communities in which it operates”, he stressed.

On his part, senior minister advised the people in the mining communities to do away with divisive tendencies and rally behind the company to achieve results which would impact positively on the lives of the people.

The chairman of the occasion, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Nana Kojo Seinti assured the company of the government’s support.

Newmont Mining Corporation, founded in 1921 is the world’s largest gold producer and employs over 13,000 people worldwide. Newmont, with headquarters in Denver, Colorado-US operates in Peru, Australia, Indonesia, US and many other places. It holds gold reserves of 83.2million ounces based on a calculated gold price of $300.
