Ahanta West district and Ministry of Information educate citizens

Mrs Henrietta Mary Eyeson, the Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive says the assembly was committed to improving the quality of life of the people by efficiently and effectively mobilising human and material resources with development partners for socio-economic development.

This, she said the assembly had undertaken many socio-economic and infrastructural development such as the upgrading of public facilities, establishment of a viable factory in collaboration with the private sector

Mrs Eyeson was speaking during a town hall meeting organised by the assembly under the auspices of the Ministry of Information to inform the people about projects, programmes and policies of the government at Agona-Nkwanta in the Western Region.

On Agriculture, the MCE said planting for jobs and investment/district centre of agriculture, commerce and Technology has started the distribution of 100,000 seedlings, and has acquired land for oil palm project with a total of 854 registered farmers for the programme.

Mrs Eyeson stated that 241 new micro and small enterprises had been created, 148 entrepreneurs identified and trained on alternative livelihood and business diversification, 10 set of start-up kits distributed to graduates, 17 youth educated in agriculture –business and livelihood training programmes with 1500 identified and trained with 574 registered under the nation builder's corp.

Under social development, she said the assembly had built schools, CHPS compound, assisted the aged and vulnerable under the LEAP project, sports promotion and the school feeding programme.

Mrs Eyeson said the sea defense project was also on course to prevent sea destruction, whilst public accountability and participation in the governance process had been given a boost.

Mr Armstrong Asmah, the Regional information Officer said the town hall meetings were a decentralised means of giving the members and leaders of the various communities nationwide the opportunity to get together to discuss the progress and emerging issues of both the central and local government.

This year, the Ministry of Information is holding Town Hall Meetings in all Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan levels to bring the entire nation up to speed on major Government Policies and Programmes and to obtain feedback from the citizenry for the Development and Governance process across the Nation.

The Regional Information Officer said the government was working in all the sectors: Agriculture, trade and industry land and natural resources, local governance, youths and sports, gender and social protection as well as education to ensure inclusive growth and development for the entire country.

He indicated that the Ministry of Information had made gains by improving transparency and public access to information through the Meet-the-Press series, town hall meetings and policy fair.

The Regional Information Officer said, the government ensured fiscal discipline in the management of public finances which resulted in the attainment of its budget deficit target for the first time since 2006.

According to him, the government had established the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP) to provide an integrated national support for early- stage (start-ups) and small businesses with seed capital of $ 10 Million.

“The Government is also implementing the Greening Business Management Initiative to train and equip the youth with skills and resources to transform vegetable production in Ghana, the government is therefore implementing the biggest Green House Estate Project in West Africa.”

Mr Asmah said some special initiatives undertaken by the government included; the establishment of the Ministry of Zongo and Inner City Development.

First of its kind, to focus on the needs and infrastructural demands of the Zongos around the Country, adding that a Zongo Development Fund Bill had been passed and established with an allocation of GH¢ 219 million.

The government has also instituted three development Authorities: Northern, Middle belt and Coastal Development Authorities, desilting of major drains in Accra and the implementation of the Persons with Disability Toll Collection Initiative where 50 per cent of the Human Resource for road toll collection were now made up of persons with disability.

Some citizenry complained about the MCE’s failure to stay in the official bungalow, but rather rented a different apartment and also owned the Ahanta Radio.
