Ahwiaa clashes: We’ll kill Assemblyman – Zongo Youth

Youth of Ahwiaa Zongo in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region have vowed to cut the throat of the Assembly man for the area, Tony Adams over his involvement in last weekend’s clashes, which left their colleagues severely injured.

According to the angry youth, the assembly man was openly bias against them as he got the police personnel who were deployed to the area when the clashes ensued to brutalize and arrest only youth from the Zongo communities, as he claimed they were rowdy and lawless.

There was a bloody clash between indigenous Ashantis and members of the Zongo Community on Saturday which resulted in dozens being injured while several properties were destroyed.

The clash was sparked by the hacking of one person by a Zongo boy on Friday during the funeral rites of a young lady in the area.

That action angered the Ashantis who stormed the Zongo community and destroyed properties. The Zongo youth earlier had also staged a reprisal attack on the indigenes with guns, machetes and other weapons.

It took the timely intervention of police and military personnel to restore order in the area.

In an interview with Kumasi based Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo, Monday, the Zongo youth vowed not to spare Hon. Tony Adams if they should get hold of him.

“When the police arrived, all their attention was on us the Zongo youth. On his orders, the police brutalized and shot at our people which has left six of them severely injured and are currently on admission at the hospital. The Ashantis think they own the land and so they can do anything they want, but they didn’t bring along any land from their mothers womb when they were born. We are very obedient people and we listen to the advise of our leaders. This assembly man got the police to cause harm to our people. Instead of giving warning shots they rather shot at them. We can assure you that if our brothers who have been arrested are not released immediately, we’ll slash the throat of the assemblyman when we get hold of him.”

However speaking to Kasapa News Monday, the Assemblyman denied having a hand in the alleged shooting or brutalizing of the Zongo youth, adding that he has no power to direct police officers as to how to do their work, adding that he wasn’t even present at the incident scene.

“How can I as an assemblyman order a policeman to shoot someone, that is not possible. What will I gain when someone is killed? Are they trying to say the Ghana Police doesn’t know its work. A whole Regional Commander was at the scene of the clashes, how can I be giving orders to the police, does the allegation by these Zongo youth make sense? Hon. Tony Adam fumed.
