A new slaughter house built by the Birim Central Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has been handed over to the butchers in the area.

The cost of the facility, which is estimated at GH¢ 363,717 from the Urban Grant Development Fund of the Assembly, is to enhance the activities of the butchers and to serve as income generation source for the Assembly.

Mr Al-Hassan Ziblim Alhassan, the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Assembly at the handing over, said the former slaughter house at Akim Oda Old Town was not in good sanitary condition and lacked adequate rooms, hence the new structure at Akim Oda Sawmill.

The slaughter house is provided with cattle kraal, hand dug well, a mechanised borehole, a toilet facility and rooms consisting of processing hall for slaughtered animals and changing room for butchers.

Mr Lawrence Obeng, the Officer in charge of Meat Inspection of the Municipality, urged the public to patronise the slaughter house for wholesome meat for consumption to avoid diseases.

Mr Mohammed Ishack the Chief Butcher at the slaughter house, expressed happiness with the provision of the facility, which would promote their business to meet the meat demands of the public.
