Akuapeman installs Environmental Chief

Akropong (E/R) Oct. 20, GNA - Nana Ofei-Nkansah, President of the Terminal Operators and Stevedoring Association, was on Thursday enstooled as the Environmental Chief (Abode Nsiesie hene) for Akuapeman under the stool name Nana Ama Okrakubea I.

Nana Ofei-Nkansah who is the Queen of Amanokrom, in the Eastern Region, dressed in traditional apparel, sat in state while the kingmakers slaughtered a sheep and sprinkled the blood on her feet. Nana Ofei-Nkansah told the press in her maiden interaction with the public that she would declare 2006 as an Environmental Year for Akuapeman to sensitize people especially elders in the area about the need for environmental sanitation.

She expressed concern about the construction of houses in waterways and other environmental offences in the area.

She mentioned farming as one major problem that affects the environment and said she would introduce other alternative means that would save the vegetation cover from destruction to sustain the livelihood of the people. Measures to replace farming activities that destroy the environment in the area would include the development of eco-tourism sites to give employment to the youth in the area. Nana Ofei Nkansah is a lawyer and holds a postgraduate degree in industrial relations and trade union studies. She is married with two children. 20 Oct. 05
