The outspoken Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the party's General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, and the outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin of orchestrating the removal of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader.

“I thought Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu suffered a coup d'état at the hands of Afenyo-Markin, Kodua, and President Akufo-Addo, and this was the time to correct it,” he stated in a message on an NPP Members of Parliament WhatsApp group named: ‘Official MPs and PCs Platform’ .

The lawmaker criticised the party's leadership, accusing them of neglecting the interests of the Ashanti Region.

Dr. Afriye highlighted a National Council meeting as an example of the alleged neglect of the Ashanti Region's interests, claiming that the region's contributions were dismissed as insignificant.

He further alleged that leadership positions were disproportionately allocated in favor of representatives from the Greater Accra Region over those from the Ashanti Region.

“At the National Council yesterday, they said our numbers don’t matter. Yet, those who wanted deputy positions pushed their agenda. When it came to the 2nd Deputy Whip, the Greater Accra group, led by Lord Commey and Prince, their organizer, shouted ‘Greater Accra, Greater Accra,’ and Jerry Ahmed, a new entrant, was given the position. Why not Mavis Nkansah Boadu? That was our rightful position!,” he wrote.

The medical doctor turned politician stated, “We shall live to regret this sellout and needless trade-off!” He warned that the party’s actions would have significant repercussions.

Dr. Afriye expressed concern over what he perceived as hostility toward the Ashanti Region by departing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and what he referred to as the “Akyem Mafias.”

“What exactly are the sins of the Ashanti Region in the eyes of Akufo-Addo and the Akyem mafias? This is total suppression of Ashanti,” Dr. Afriye lamented.

“Never again should we, as a caucus, trade off our rightful position for lower bargains!” he stressed.

He called for the region to pursue greater opportunities and refuse to accept mediocrity, emphasising the importance of ambition and strategic efforts to improve development and business prospects.

“We have suffered enough—poor development, struggling businesses, and more. We should not have sold our value for such a lower bargain,” he concluded.
