Akufo-Addo capable of legalising homosexuality – MP warns

The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim Constituency in the Eastern Region has called on Ghanaians not to take it lightly, the answers given by President Akufo-Addo on the legalization of homosexuality in the country.

Mr. Derek Darko Ohene Assifo Bekoe warned that the government can use its majority in Parliament to pass any bill on homosexuality into law.

President Akufo-Addo was on Aljazeera’s Talk to Aljazeera on Sunday where he commented on a wide range of issues concerning Africa and Ghana in particular.

Responding to a question by Aljazeera’s Jane Dutton on why homosexuality is illegal in Ghana, Akufo-Addo said: “This is the socio-cultural issue if you like…I don’t believe that in Ghana, so far, a sufficiently strong coalition has emerged which is having that impact on public opinion that will say: ‘Change [the law], let’s then have a new paradigm in Ghana”.

Reacting to the issue on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene on Monday, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislator said “we have three main faiths in Ghana…Christian, Muslims and traditionalists, and all of them are against homosexuality so it is a worrying statement from the President”.

Mr. Assifo Bekoe said Ghanaians should not joke with the issue because it can destroy the nation as well as the future of its youth. “If the president says he would pass it through bill, it can work, because the NPP has the majority and the speaker cannot say he will not do it”, the MP explained in Twi.

The MP said homosexuals are influencing policies of various countries, and urged that “we put law aside because the Bible is even against it”.
