Akufo-Addo delivering his promises to the Military - Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated the Nana Addo-led administration’s strategy to transform Ghana’s security services to world-class security institutions.

In fulfilment of government’s promises to retool the military and provide essential facilities for their welfare, Dr. Bawumia last Friday cut the sod for the construction of a 20 million Ghana cedis multipurpose sports centre for the 6 Garrison of the Ghana Armed Forces in Tamale in the Northern Region.

The centre is the first of six such projects to be constructed for all six garrisons of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Vice President Dr. Bawumia said, “This is in fulfilment of the promise made by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.”

Dr. Bawumia noted that government in its quest to make Ghana’s security agencies one of the best in the world has executed a number of projects such as the barracks regeneration project, the defence health initiative project which comprises of the 500-bed military hospital project at Afari in the Ashanti region among others.

The edifice would comprise of a FIFA standard size Football pitch, VIP box, Media box, Pressroom, sanitary facilities, a 400m Hockey pitch, IAAF Standard 8 lane running tracks around the field, a standard size lawn tennis court, a combined Volleyball and Basketball court, a multi-purpose hall (Gymnasium) for indoor games, two therapeutic/aromatic gardens, and offices.

The facility is expected to be completed by April 2020 and would be open to the general public to enhance the military-civilian relationship.

The Vice President also handed over an ambulance to officials of the Base Hospital to assist in the delivery of medical services to the officers and military personnel of the 6 Garrison.
