President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed fears the issue of homosexuality may become topical in the near future in Ghana.

“I think it is something that is bound to happen like elsewhere in the world.” But he says “it is not so far a matter which is on the agenda”.

President Akufo-Addo made these remarks on Sunday on Al Jazeera’s Talk To Al Jazeera hosted by Jane Dutton.

Ghana’s laws frown on same-sex marriage and it is punishable.

But there is growing activism for the legalization of homosexuality with LGBT campaigns run almost everywhere.

President Akufo-Addo says just like it is happening in other parts of the world, there will soon be that trigger in Africa, particularly Ghana.

“I believe that those are the same processes.”

He recounted how the United Kingdom did not consider homosexuality an issue in his school days while living there.

But later the activism grew stronger and “it forced a change in law,” he recalled.

“At the moment, I don’t feel that in Ghana there is that strong cult of opinion that will say this is something that we need to deal with.”
