The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has granted executive approval to establish the University of Local Government and Development in Akomadan, Ashanti Region.

In a letter dated July 1, 2024, signed by the Secretary to the President, Ambassador Nana Asante Bediatuo, and addressed to the Minister of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the President noted that the University will be a specialised public degree awarding, research and professional training Institution whose mandate shall be of strategic national importance for local governance.

The University was formerly the Akomadan Campus of the Institute of Local Government Studies.

The Minister of Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah has been very instrumental in ensuring that the institution meets the criteria for the grant of executive approval so that it can be an autonomous, fully-fledged University.
