With eyes on the road and ears on the ground, the signs are clear for all to see that Nana Akufo-Addo would ultimately be crowned the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
But a quick attempt by some members of the party to stop some qualified candidates from contesting in October has angered the managing editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper. Mr. Ben Ephson has informed Peace FM that although Nana Addo is the favourite to win the contest, he must be allowed to complete the flagbearer race before being handed the crown.
According to Mr. Ephson, the party stands to lose should those making the call assume Nana Akufo Addo’s landslide victory chalked during the Special Delegates Congress is a full representation of his popularity.
In his estimation, less than 800 delegates are unworthy to determine the flagbearer of the NPP. He explained that per the NPP’s constitution, it is clearly stated that 145,000 delegates hold the power to decide who they want as flagbearer.
“They increased the number of delegates to 145,000 because they claimed 3000 is a smaller number. If 3000 is not a good figure, then they cannot justify the use of 800 delegates. The 749 votes obtained by Nana Addo is even less than 1% of the 145,000. The voting must come on," he added.
