When the late Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills was having challenges with his health, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) made his health issue its political chewing stick.
As Ghanaians prepare to mark the first anniversary of President Mills’ death, however, the NPP is finding itself in a complete state of quagmire as its 2012 presidential candidate, Mr. Williams Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presently battles to survive.
Nana Akufo-Addo, 3 weeks ago, was rushed to the Korle-Bu Cardio Centre as a result of serious cardiac arrest he suffered and was advised to rest, according to this paper’s intelligence sources.
Now, an NPP Member of Parliament (MP) has come to spill the beans: The MP (name withheld) in a telephone conversation with The Informer over the weekend, said; “when Nana Addo was asked by doctors at Korle-Bu to rest, he refused; Nana Addo had a cardiac arrest that sent him to Korle-Bu”.
The reason the MP hinted was that Nana Addo was worried that his political opponents will make fun of him. He added, “Reports from close associates from London said, the London Hospital was full of praises for doctors at Korle-Bu Cardio Centre, for the emergency first aid work they did on Nana Addo”.
According to the MP, the series of tests they did indicated that Nana Addo would have to slow down on his work schedule and if possible retire from active politics.
He further disclosed that, Nana Addo had promised his doctors in London that he will cut –down his schedule including the attendance of the Supreme Court hearing of his election petition case, regularly, to pay attention to his medication.
“Nana Addo was not ‘too well’, but was hard-pressed by his inner-circle advisors to try and put a strong face, and act as if he was a 45-year-old person; so that, his political opponents will not laugh at him”, the MP has stated.
“My brother, Nana Addo is sick and must be asked to rest instead of [the] ostrich his handlers are playing to send him into his grave; I can tell you that Nana Addo finds it difficult to breath anytime I sit close to him in the courtroom, and that is why he must rest and not allow the court issue to “kill” him”, he unequivocally stated.
He added that it has become glaringly clear that the Supreme Court case is not going the NPP’s way at all. That is why the NPP is diverting attention with the Martin Amidu case. For example, what has an allegation of a purported case of causing financial loss got to do with the election petition, he asked.
On those interested in the 2016 flagbearership slot, the MP confirmed an earlier story carried out by The Informer of John Kufuor’s Ashanti-faction, saying, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would only be elected flagbearer of NPP over their dead bodies.
There is no way the NPP will either elect somebody from the three (3) Northern Regions as its flagbearer in 2016. Given the hard-line positions of the Ashanti and the Akyem factions in the NPP, only a Fante or Ga presidential ticket can save the NPP in 2016, he concludes.
