President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lauded the Vice President-elect, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on her election as the Vice President-elect in the recent general election.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has made history as the first woman to occupy the vice-presidential position in Ghana. Prof. Naana Jane’s achievement marks a milestone in the political landscape and gender equality efforts.
Delivering his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2024, the President said, “I take the opportunity also to congratulate Dr. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President-elect, the first woman to occupy that status in our history,” the President stated.
President Akufo-Addo also extended heartfelt congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the December 2024 elections.
“Mr. Speaker, I would like to take the opportunity of this august podium to congratulate again with whom I came into Parliament together for the first time in 1997, President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his historic comeback and victory of 7th December 2024,” he stated.
Reflecting on his tenure, Nana Addo acknowledged the challenges and successes of the past four years, particularly working with a Parliament where his party held the slimmest majority and the Speaker was from the opposition.
"Mr. Speaker, you and I have made history of a kind these past four years. I must acknowledge the role you played in keeping steady the ship of state and the governance structures of our country. This was the first time the executive had to deal with not just a Parliament with the slimmest of majorities but with a Speaker from the opposition party," he noted.
Regardless of complications associated with politics, Akufo-Addo commended the cooperation between the executive and legislative arms, emphasizing their shared commitment to Ghana’s development.
“We found a way to accommodate each other, and the government functioned successfully," he said.
President Akufo-Addo further praised the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission for its efficient and commendable management of the 2020 and 2024 elections.
He acknowledged the EC’s contribution to the nation's progress despite challenges faced during electoral processes.
“The efficient, praiseworthy manner in which the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission has conducted the past two elections of 2020 and 2024, despite their challenges, is a significant contribution to this end.”
