Like many Ghanaians, I have heard with shock and dismay the news of the tragic killing of Professor Kofi Awoonor-Williams, former Chairperson of the Council of State, in the terrorist outrages committed yesterday at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
A well-known writer, poet and film maker, Prof Awoonor has played a prominent role in the public life of our country these last three or four decades. Despite our political differences, he and I maintained a good personal relationship.
I shall forever remember with fondness his erudition, wit and courtesy. The Ghanaian nation has lost a distinguished son.
My sincere condolences and sympathies go to his family for their loss, and to his son who was also injured in the abominable incident, and wish him a speedy recovery.
May God bless him and may his soul rest in perfect peace.
