National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress, Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw has called on president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to render an unqualified apology to all women in the country following some comments he made during a gender conference in Vancouver, Canada.
According to her, the president belittled and embarrassed Ghanaian women on such a global stage when he could have used the opportunity given him to project Ghanaian women and Ghana as a whole to the world.
She said, “Mr President, you have embarrassed Ghanaian women in no uncertain terms on a global stage. You need to redeem yourself and render an unqualified apology to all womenfolk in Ghana. The earlier you do this, the better for your already dwindled reputation”.
Speaking to the media at the NDC National Headquaters in Accra on Thursday, Dr Bissiw stated that, president Akufo-Addo has proven that he cares less about women, adding that, his comments reinforces patriarchal system that is already entrenched in the Ghanaian society.
She further said the focus of the gender dialogue which took place in Canada under the theme ‘ Women Deliver’ was to celebrate women from all walks of life who have contributed to the progress of the world but, president Akufo-Addo did not see any improvement Ghanaian women have contributed to the world, including his administration within his two and half years in power.
“However, as the world continues to celebrate women, the president of Ghana thinks otherwise of Ghanaian women and on that occasion, President Akufo-Addo did not clothe the Ghanaian woman in any glory at all”, Hannah Bissiw said.
