A former Chairman for the Energy Commission, Dr. Kwame Ampofo, is claiming that, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is recklessly managing the Free Senior High School policy.
The academician who is seeking to contest the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), told Kwame Tutu in an exclusive interview that, the free SHS was recklessly rolled out, rushed by the NPP with no proper planning.
The challenges confronting the free SHS he posited were generated due to the failure of government to think through the process well. The policy he strongly opined is not sustainable and will fail if government fails to review it through an inter-party consultation.
‘’Look at what is happening, some of the beneficiaries are sleeping on verandas, some are not having access to the needed infrastructure. The way NPP is managing the free SHS is reckless. It was not planned for. It was not thought through,’’ he added.
He told the host the NDC would not manage the policy in a wholesale manner like the NPP but target it and put in the needed infrastructure. The free SHS policy he stressed is a constitutional provision and not a policy or innovation by the NPP.
‘’This is not the first time we are having free education. We had one in the era of Kwame Nkrumah,’’ he said. The NPP is being irresponsible, hasty and careless with the free SHS. It is reckless. For the NPP it was politics and sloganeering and got Ghanaians supporting it. But it is not sustainable. Free SHS will be sustainable if done properly.
But the way NPP is doing it is not sustainable.’‘
