Akyempim renews appeal to President Kufuor

Gomoa Nyanyano (C/R), Nov 26, GNA - The Oshiehene of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area, Nana Obeng Wiabo V, has renewed the appeal to President J. A. Kufuor to consider the petition to change Gomoa Afransi as the District capital for the newly created Gomoa East District Assembly.

Nana Wiabo, who is also the Chief of Gomoa Nyanyano also called on the President to order investigations into the circumstances leading to the change of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) collectively signed between the two Overlords of the Gomoa District and other stakeholders at Apam in January this year.

Speaking at a meeting with the Chiefs and elders at Nyanyano at the weekend, Nana Wiabo said they were not satisfied with the sudden change of the MOU, in which it was agreed that the District capital should be sited at Potsin.

He noted that the chiefs have sent another petition through the Central Regional Minister to the President on the need to effect change to ensure peace and stability in the area. Nana Wiabo said the chiefs wanted the government to maintain the agreement between the Gomoa District Chief Executive, Ms Joyce Aidoo, Mr Oscar Abban, the Presiding Member, the Two MPs and the Chiefs to promote the fast development of the area. The Oshiehene said the Chiefs and the people of Akyempim should be convinced by the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Environment, since it would be very difficult to contain the "imminent explosion looming".

He said it would be agreed if the District Capital was changed to a neutral place preferably Gomoa Dabayin instead of either Gomoa Potsin or Afransi to avoid dispute.

Nana Wiabo stated that recently a delegation of Chiefs and opinion leaders was sent to the Minister of Local Government to inform him that no town was indicated in the MOU as to where the District Capital should be sited before the announcement by the government.
