The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North, Alhaji Alhassan Suhuyini has stepped up efforts towards tackling the perennial flooding in some parts of the Constituency.

Every year, residents have had to battle flooding which often leads to loss of lives and properties.

Last year about four people, including a 54-year-old teacher, Hajia Fati Bapuni lost their lives in the floods.

The annual disaster is largely attributed to chocked gutters in the area.
With this year’s rain almost due, residents in the flood prone communities are worried about what may befall them in the coming weeks.

As a proactive measure, the MP has sponsored the desilting of chocked drains in a bid to prevent or at least mitigate the impact of the floods this year.

Excavators were sighted over the weekend at Kalpohin, Gumani, Nyanshegu, Ward K and Fuo, scooping out sand and debris from the chocked drains to allow for easy passage of water.

Tipper trucks were also seen carting the sand away to prevent it from falling back into the drains in the event of a rainfall.

Alhaji Suhuyini said “yesterday my sponsored clearing (desilting) of some major drains in some flood prone communities started earnestly, in anticipation of the rains. Ward K, Kalpohini, Sangani, Fuo etc.”

A visibly elated resident said “what the MP is doing is a wise thing. All the gutters have filled up and because of that any time it rains the water cannot flow along the gutter and so it diverts into our houses and into our rooms. We are grateful to honourable for his timely intervention. We pray to God to bless him so he can continue to help us.”

The assemblyman for the Kalpohin Electoral Area who doubles as the Presiding Member for the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Awal also expressed his gratitude to the MP for his intervention.

Alahji Suhuyini appealed to government to intervene and fix some broken footbridges and roads in the area to complement his efforts towards finding a lasting solution to the problem.

“It’s my hope, and I’m following up, that the government through its agencies will complement my efforts by fixing/strengthening some broken footbridges and grading or funding the fast completion of some roads that are deteriorating,” he said.

In his efforts towards improving education in the constituency, Alhaji Suhuyini, about a week ago, donated some 400 dual desks and 5000 exercise books to some basic schools in the area.
