Aliu Vetted At Last

Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama yesterday presented himself to the NPP's Vetting Committee to fulfill the ruling party's requirement for nomination to contest in next month's congress for election as presidential candidate for Election 2008.

There are 18 other contestants. The Vice president's vetted was aborted last week when the committee's chairman was unable to attend the sitting of the committee.

Earlier in the morning yesterday, the Vice President called on President Kufuor at his Airport Residential Area private residence to check on his health following Wednesday's accident involving the president's car.

Tomorrow Saturday, the Vice President would be "storming" Mankessim in the Central Region to launch his campaign which close aides have described as symbolic. In Election 2004 the Central Region swung to the NPP making it possible for the party to win outright.

After the Mankessim launch, the Vice President would go all out and touch all the 230 constituencies before December 22 2007.

Meanwhile Naa Sohimwiniye Danah Gore II, Paramount Chief of Dorimon Traditional Area has observed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government's successful administration is due to effective cooperation and collaboration between President John Agyekum Kufuor and Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama.

He therefore, called on delegates to the party's December 22 Congress to take note of this fact in their search for a successor to President Kufuor.

Naa Gore made the observation at a durbar organised in honour of Hajia Ramatu Mahama, wife of the Vice President at Dorimon in the Wa West District on Tuesday.

Hajia Ramatu is on a three-day tour of the region to interact with chiefs and party executives to solicit votes for her husband.

Naa Gore expressed appreciation to the government for creating a separate district and a constituency for the traditional area that would impact positively on their socio-economic development.

Hajia Mahama appealed to the delegates to elect her husband to lead the NPP in the 2008 general elections.

She urged other candidates contesting for the NPP flag bearership to see themselves as people belonging to a great family and conduct their electioneering campaigns in a more decent manner for the sake of unity within the party.

Hajia Ramatu called on people from the three Northern Regions to show more concern for the welfare of their children and send them to school to unearth their potentials for the country's development.

At another durbar at Kaleo in the Nadowli District, Naa Banawini Sandow II, Paramount Chief of Kaleo Traditional Area, said Vice President Aliu Mahama had demonstrated to Ghanaians some of the finest and best leadership quality and capabilities and should be given the mandate to lead the NPP.

Hajia Ramatu is a soft spoken woman not given to much public pronouncements. Now that she has started a road show for her husband, it shows how intense the race has come for a successor to President Kufuor. Vice President Aliu Mahama, after tomorrow's launch is set to intensify his road show throughout the country, that is if vice presidential duties do not interfere.
