Although the Ghana @ 50 accident free campaign has not been official launched, the program has started gaining momentum as the organizers have set men on the ground to embark on intensive road safety campaign as the nation gradually moves towards its 50th anniversary.
The MP for Oforikrom, Hon. Elizabeth Agyeman, who has been championing road safety education since last year, has taken up the course with support from the New Edition Road Safety Campaign.
She arrived in Kumasi Thursday evening to inspire the men and make sure all is set for Saturday‘s launching which is to attract people from the length and breadth of the country, stakeholders in road safety, majority of whom will come from the various transport unions and drivers.
Speaking to newsmen on arrival, the MP called on all citizenry in Ashanti and the nation as a whole to get involved in the program since no one knows when an accident would occur in his lifetime.
She urged women to take active part in the education because, according to her, women are endowed with the ability to talk to men, which would in a way bring down the spate of accidents.
The Commanding Officer of the Ashanti regional Police motor Traffic and Transport Unit, DSP James Sarfo Peprah urges all motorists in the country to ensure accidents free celebrations and stressed that any accident that would occur at this time when people from all corners of the world are trooping in the country could earn the nation a bad name, as far as road safety is concerned.
“Ghana is fifty years old and anybody who in fifty should do everything in maturity. Therefore Ghanaians should learn from our past mistakes and avoid preventable accidents which have cost the nation of precious human lives and property.” he told journalists in Kumasi.
