Emile Short, Former Commissioner for CHRAJ Emile Short, Former Commissioner for CHRAJ

Former Commissioner for the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short wants the law on asset declaration amended to enable it deal with corruption effectively.

Speaking on 3FM’s morning show, Sunrise, on Wednesday, the former judge at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda with the mandate to trial top level public officials in 2004 argued that, the present state of the asset declaration law makes the law ineffective and must be amended to work effectively.

He told host of Sunrise, Winston Amoah that “We need to amend the law on asset declaration because the present state of the law makes the whole legal regime very ineffective.

“Nobody monitors whether public officers have actually submitted or filed their registration. Nobody has the responsibility to verify the accuracy of those who have actually filed the declaration”.

The former CHRAJ Boss was speaking on the debate on making corruption a felony, arguing that amending the asset declaration law will be one of the major steps in fighting corruption in a robust and effective manner.
