Amenfi Central MP breaks silence on petition to declare his seat vacant due to independent candidacy

Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has expressed his indifference towards a petition filed by the minority caucus seeking to declare his seat vacant, according to a citinewsroom.com report.

In an interview with Citi News on October 15, 2024, Kwakye-Ackah, who is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections, explained that his decision stemmed from what he perceives as unfair treatment by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwakye-Ackah criticised the NDC for endorsing his opponent as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central, which he believes was unjust.

He recounted an incident where he was accused of supporting a candidate who allegedly forged documents, leading to a court injunction on the parliamentary primary and the candidate being declared unopposed.

“The announcement went out that I said I had given my support to the person who forged documents, and because of that, the court injuncted it [the parliamentary primary], and the person was declared unopposed. I felt that no, that is not fair. Sometimes they should treat people fairly,” Kwakye-Ackah stated.

He continued, “If you say you are going to rerun, give everybody a fair chance, and if the person loses fairly, he will understand. Why should you open the nomination and just take my money, just keep my GH¢45,000, which is no small money? So, I have decided that if the people want me, I will go independent.”

Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding his seat, Kwakye-Ackah has stated that he is focused on his independent candidacy and is unbothered by the petition
