Amidu's Appointment: Nana Addo gambling with NPP’s political future - Lawyer

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been accused of gambling with the political future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with the appointment of Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.

Law Lecturer, Moses Foh Amoaning said the President has made a bold decision by appointing a known member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fill such a position.

But this decision, he said, is a form of gambling with the political future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as Martin Amidu has a presidential ambition.

“Martin Amidu is a cadre who is a symbol of the probity and accountability which Rawlings stands for. The true NDC people will be happy. Nana Addo is playing a political game and this a risk he is taking, if Martin Amidu performs the job very well, in fact, he will become a likely NDC presidential candidate…if he does a very good job, he will become a presidential candidate for the NDC…,” he argued on Accra-based Oman FM.

This notwithstanding, Foh Amoaning believes the President would still receive the highest form of commendation for making such a bold move.

Martin Amidu was named the special prosecutor by President Akufo-Addo at a short ceremony at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

The President has since been commended for the nominating a member of the opposition party for that position.

Many believe Martin Amidu will do a good job that will help end corruption in the country.

An argument Foh Amoaning subscribes to and commended the President for making such a bold decision.

He further warned appointees of Akufo-Addo to be wary of their actions in government as according to him Martin Amidu has demonstrated in the past that he can prosecute anyone who falls foul of the law.
