Anger as Agona West market women confront Cynthia Morrison over her decision to go independent

Market women at Agona Swedru, in the Central Region, have expressed disapproval of Agona West Member of Parliament (MP) Cynthia Morrison's decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections.

The incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP and former Minister of Gender recently announced her independent bid after losing the NPP parliamentary primary to Christopher Arthur.

In a recent address to her supporters at Agona Bobikuma, Morrison, who has served two consecutive terms, stated that she has unfinished business in the constituency, prompting her decision to contest independently.

However, this move has sparked outrage among traders in the Agona Swedru market, who feel betrayed by the MP.

Speaking during a press conference organized by the market women, they expressed their disappointment, questioning why Morrison could not support her successor after the constituents had shown her support and love over the years.

“There was someone before we brought her. We voted for her the second time. Since it is not right for one person to enjoy a good life, they brought us Chris and we the market women have accepted him since he is an NPP.

“So, what happened for our mother to be saying she is not bothered over Bawumia’s victory or defeat?

“We want the leadership to come here. Bawumia you are now our flag bearer so if you don’t come and we lose this seat, we will not take it lightly with you,” one of them said, as quoted by onuaonline.com.

They urged her to reconsider her decision, warning that it could damage her reputation in the constituency.

"If someone hadn’t been changed, she wouldn’t have come. We want the leadership of the party to address this issue," one of the women stated.

Charity Dankwa, a market queen, appealed to the Agona West NPP constituency, regional, and national executives to intervene and persuade Cynthia Morrison to abandon her independent bid, citing her previous benefits from the NPP administration.

They criticized Morrison's decision as selfish and mischievous, arguing that it could split the NPP vote and pave the way for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to win the seat.
