Accra, Aug. 19, GNA - Dr Busumuru Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, was on Friday honoured with the Global Excellence Award at the Second Millennium Excellence Awards held in Accra. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Life Patron of the Awards, decorated the Secretary - General while Mr Kojo Yankah, Founder of the African Institute of Journalism (AIJ), read the citation. He was among 25 people and institutions honoured.
Dr Busumuru Annan's citation read: "The Global Excellence Award is bestowed on you as a Ghanaian for winning the hearts of millions of people worldwide and for championing the cause of peace.
"We recognise you for strengthening the work of the UN in the areas of development and the maintenance of international peace and security; encouraging and advocating human rights; the rule of law and the universal values of equity, tolerance and human dignity.
"We honour you for your great work as the great UN reformer; for your comprehensive programme of reform of the United Nations. We remember you for your first major initiative 'Renewing the United Nations'".
The event is being organised by the Excellence Awards Foundation to honour individuals, institutions and groups that have achieved great distinction in their various fields of endeavour.
Thirty-one individuals, institutions and groups were honoured at the first event held in 2000.
Dr Busumuru Annan, who was given a standing ovation after the presentation, said: "Whatever we do, our role is important. The award is an honour to the entire staff of the UN."
He expressed appreciation for the honour done him by the organisers saying it would encourage others to promote the search for such excellence.
President John Agyekum Kufuor, who was the Guest of Honour, commended the organisers for the initiative to honour distinguished Ghanaians.
"It is a historic landmark for a private initiative to bestow honour of excellence and high achievement in various fields of endeavour on those who have contributed to the country's socio-economic development."
President Kufuor said Ghana had quality human resource to inspire the youth for future development. "You are models of determination, courage, achievements and I hope you will continue to aspire higher laurels. Ghana will continue to nurture such people of high noble stature."
President Kufuor said Dr Busumuru Annan had exhibited exemplary courage and an un-daunting spirit to serve the UN and the award was a fitting tribute for his selfless devotion to the cause of humanity, not only in Ghana but the world.
"We pray that you will finish the remaining tenure of office with distinction," he said.
Among the dignitaries at the function were President Mathieu Kerekou of Benin and the Togolese Prime Minister, Edem Kodjo, who were presented with Kente by the Asantehene and decorated by Nana Otuo Serebour II, Juabenhene and Member of the Council of State.
