Kumasi, Oct. 27, GNA - Contract for the 2.5-kilometre stretch of the Anomangye-Mpatasie road, which is in a very deplorable condition, is soon to be awarded for reconstruction.
The reconstruction of the road, which also links the Offinso-Barekese road, comes as a big relief for the people living in the two communities, all suburbs of Kumasi, who are finding life unbearable as a result of the deplorable condition of the road. Mr J.O. Amoo-Gottfried, Kumasi Metropolitan Engineer of the Department of Urban Roads, who spoke to the GNA in an interview, said the move to reconstruct the road was due to the untiring efforts and importunate request from the Landlords Association in the area. He said the road was awarded to a contractor last year, but the contractor after working for sometime decided to abandon the contract for reasons best known to himself.
Mr Amoo-Gottfried said the metropolis had had to grapple with a lot of problems in an expansion programme, thus the metropolis, which had only four sub-metros now has 10 with a road network of 846 kilometres.
He outlined a number of rehabilitation and reconstruction works including the interchange development programme proposals which when completed would give the city a facelift.
Others were the Asafo Market interchange, which had already started, Oforikrom and Sofoline interchanges. He said there were also frequent routine maintenance work like grading, pothole patching, sectional repairs, drain/culvert cleaning and traffic signal maintenance among others.
"The city will see a tremendous development if the momentum is sustained", he added.
Asked if he was satisfied with work on contracts awarded, he replied that some did very satisfactory work while others also did shoddy work but stressed that the onus was on them to ensure that the right thing was done for the benefit of all Ghanaians. 27 Oct. 04
