Aowin Municipal Assembly holds second ordinary meeting

Aowin Municipal Assembly in the Western Region has held its second ordinary general Assembly sitting.

In his welcome address, the Presiding Member, Mr. Felix Foster Ackah was grateful to management of the Aowin Municipal Assembly for organizing a three-day in-service training to honourable Assembly Members both elected and appointed assembly members to be on top of issues during assembly sittings.

Mr. Ackah also announced to the House that he was in close contact with management to organize another training for conveners from each sub-committing and heads of department and other unit heads.

Delivering his sessional address at the second ordinary meeting, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Aowin Municipal Assembly, Mr. Samuel Adu-Gyamfi touched on performance of 2018 composite budget, developmental projects and programs executed by the Assembly, health, education, water and sanitation, security, reports from various sub-committees, executive reports and performance of DPAT assessment.

Mr. Adu-Gyamfi said government continues to show commitment to the protection of the environment and the natural resources of the country.

"As part of efforts aimed at arresting the degradation of the forest and wildlife resources, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission have instituted Community Resource Management Areas (CREMA) to empower communities in reserve and off-reserve areas to partner the forestry commission and other stakeholders to manage and protect the country’s natural resources", he revealed.

"One Hundred (100) executive members of two Community Resource Management Areas in the Aowin Municipality were inaugurated and inducted into office.T hey include Aowin and Boin CREMAs", he added.

On developmental projects, the MCE said, a total of 15 projects and programmes are currently ongoing in the Municipality and are at various stages of completion.

Mr. Adu-Gyamfi announced 4 new projects that have been sent to tender and awarded on contract.

The projects are construction of 1No. Box Culvert along Jensue-Kwesikrom road, construction of 1 No. Storm Drain at Enchi –Zongo, construction of 1No. Double Diameter Culvert at Sikanti and construction of Magistrate Bungalow at Enchi.

On education sector, the MCE said "we are in two years into free Senior High School Programme. Many students who hitherto would not have had access to Senior High School Education are all now in school".

He said, "The successful rollout of the programme has led to an unprecedented increase in enrolments in public Senior High Schools thereby putting a lot of pressure on the existing infrastructure".

"As part of measures to address the growing number of the students, reduce class sizes and increase contact hours between teachers and students, government in September this year introduced the double track system", he added.

"The Double Track System divides the entire student body and staff into two different tracks, so while one track in school, the other track is on vacation. Every semester will be 80 days for the two tracks", the MCE added.
