Appiah Stadium allegations—Fresh evidence emerge

There’s evidence to suggest that the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports may have sponsored some supporters of the ruling party to Germany to watch the just ended FIFA World Cup.

The ministry at a recent news conference denied that it funded supporters of the NPP to the World Cup. Deputy Minister O B Amoah dared the minority in parliament who called for investigations into the matter to provide proof of the claims.

Well the minority has produced a letter purportedly signed by the deputy minister in which he assures the German Embassy here in Accra that the ministry will pay for travel and living expenses of the NPP’s constituency chairman for Buem.

Minority Spokesman on Youth and Sports, Abuga Pele says this is enough evidence for any enquiry into the allegations. Evans Mensah has more.

A copy of the letter obtained by JOY News is signed by the Deputy Minister of Education and Sport O B Amoah on letter head from the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The letter dated 9th June 2006 is addressed to the Consular of the German Embassy Visa Section.

It’s titled ‘Sponsorship for Akotey Peter by the Ministry to the World Cup 2006 in Germany’.

Another letter from the NPP Headquarters signed by General Secretary Nana Ohene Ntow to the German Embassy describes the said Akotey Peter as Party Chairman of the Buem Branch.

The Ministry’s letter states explicitly that the ministry will sponsor Mr. Akwotey’s stay from the beginning of the tournament till the end of Ghana’s participation.

The letter signed by Mr. Amoah says that Mr. Akwetey’s travel expenses, world cup entry tickets, health insurance and other costs incurred in connection to the trip to watch Ghana’s matches will be bourn by the ministry.

JOYNEWS enquiries however revealed that Mr. Akwotey was refused the visa to travel but Minority Spokesman, Abuga Pele says the letters provide enough proof to support the allegations made by an NPP serial caller, Appiah stadium.

The Minority in Parliament first called for the independent investigations when an NPP serial caller, Appiah Stadium accused the government of sponsoring NPP party supporters to watch the World Cup tournament.

Mr. Pele told JOYNEWS the minority would push the matter as far as they could.

Attempts to get officials of the Ministry to react have so far failed but we would keep listeners updated on the issues as they unfold.
