The Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, has thrown his weight behind Akufo-Addo following the President’s controversial response to questions relating to homosexuality.
According to him, Akufo-Addo was right with his response on the issue of homosexuality, which, he said, only sought to emphasis Ghana’s cultural reality.
In an interview with international media network Aljazeera, the President failed to outrightly dismiss the idea of legalizing homosexuality in Ghana.
Asked about the possibility of such acts being legalized in this country, Akufo-Addo said: “it is bound to happen’ and that homosexuality will be legalized if Ghanaians call for it".
The President’s response drew the ire of many, who criticized him for failing to be bold in condemning the act when presented with the opportunity.
However, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle believes that President did no wrong in giving such a response. According to him, the practice of homosexuality is not allowed in Ghana, per the country’s constitution, and so that chapter should be closed. But speaking to Joy News, The Catholic Archbishop said: “The President is not God, he cannot say that Ghana will never accept it. He said culturally, it is not an issue that Ghanaians will accept.” He added that he doesn’t think people listened “very carefully to the President before they jumped to a conclusion."
In his view, homosexuals are also children of God and must be defended irrespective of the path they use to thread. The Archbishop urged caution with the treatment of gays, insisting they also have their rights which must be protected.
