Armed robber dies in police shoot-out

Tema, Aug. 9, GNA - An armed robber fell dead and three others escaped in a gun battle with the police during an attack on Pastor Gideon Ahiaba of Great Temple International Church at his residence at New Prampram near Mataheko, off Afienya road last night.

Briefing newsmen at Tema on Monday, Mrs Agnes Sikanartey, Tema Regional Police Commander said the body of the deceased, who is yet to be identified had been deposited at the Police Mortuary, while the pastor's wife, Gifty and an organist who received gun shot wounds were on admission at a hospital.

She said on Sunday night four armed men with locally manufactured pistols attacked the residence, opened fire on the Pastor and his family and in a struggle they bit the pastor's fingers and shot his wife on the back, while the organist also received bullet wounds at his back. She said in the course of the struggle the victims managed to inform the police whose presence resulted in a shoot out killing one of the robbers and the three others managed to escape.

Mrs Sikanartey said the robbers made away with a video deck, musical gadgets, personal effects and 500,000 cedis cash.

The Police Commander said one locally manufactured pistol and nine live cartridges were found on the body of the deceased while one locally manufactured pistol and three empty shells were found at the scene. She appealed to the public to inform the police about any persons with gunshot wounds.
