Winneba-Junction, March 5, GNA - Residents of Winneba-Junction area have made an urgent appealed to the Inspector General of Police ((IGP) to provide them with adequate police protection, to stop the incessant attacks by armed robbers.
A cross section of the residents made the appeal at a forum organized by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Mr Mike Hammah on the development of the Winneba-Junction on Monday.
Mr Kwesi Tawiah, a driver showed a letter purported to have been written to him by some armed robbers on a possible attack on him at any moment. According to him four other residents have also received similar letters, which is creating panic, fears and uncertainty. According to him copies of the letters have been sent to the Municipal Chief Executive, MP and District Police Commander for their attention and assistance.
Mr Tawiah said last Sunday a gang of armed robbers attacked and raped some students of a private University in the area at a gun point. He said the robbers also made away with unspecified amounts of money, wedding rings, mobile phones and other valuable items, belonging to a prominent citizen at Gomoa Ansaful near Winneba Junction.
According to him, the citizen who wants to remain anonymous said it took the robbers about 45 minutes to break into the room, but she could not get police assistance when she called the Winneba Police Station. Nii Ephraim, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, addressing the forum said the assembly had released a vehicle to the police for night patrols, but the vehicle is not strong enough for anti-armed robbery operation. Nii Ephraim who is also the Chairman of the Effutu Municipal Security Committee (MISEC) said the police was under resourced in the areas of transportation and other logistics to clamp down on the armed robbers who have invaded Winneba-Junction and its surroundings, and appealed for public support.
