Kumasi, Dec. 23, GNA - Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has appealed to the government to support chiefs to play their proper roles in society.
He said it was regrettable that successive governments had failed to address the concerns of chiefs, which he said was affecting the chieftaincy institution.
Addressing the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs in Kumasi on Friday, the Asantehene said for instance out of the 10 regional houses of chiefs, the Greater-Accra and the Eastern regions had counsel.
This situation, Otumfuo Osei Tutu said was affecting the work of most of the judicial committees of the regional houses of chiefs. He noted that the Judicial Committee of the House had been reconstituted and expressed the hope that it would work harder next year to settle the over forty cases pending before the house.
The Asantehene used the opportunity to advise the chiefs who represented the House in the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council, stool lands, Prisons Service and the Police Service meetings and others, to ensure that whatever discussions that occurred during the meeting, could be communicated to other members of the House.
He lauded the members for the establishment of a Welfare Committee for the House to protect their welfare, and asked them to pay their contributions promptly.
The Asantehene extended gratitude and appreciation to other committees including, the Standing Orders Committee, Finance and Administration and the Research Committees for the good work done in the discharge of their duties.
He observed that the years ahead would be challenging and urged the members to forge ahead in unity in the deliberations of the House. 23 Dec. 05
