Asantehene calls for aggressive promotion of girl-child education

Kumasi, June 11, GNA - Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11, Asantehene, has underlined the need for more aggressive push towards girl-child education.

He said it was important for all to join in efforts at making the school environment friendly to the girl child.

Everything should be done to provide adequate infrastructure, particularly in girls' schools and incentive packages to motivate them to pursue academic careers, he advised.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu said this when the Board of Directors of the Afia Kobi Serwaah Ampem Girls' Senior High School (SHS) paid a courtesy call on him at his Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

They were there to officially introduce the newly appointed headmistress, Ms Esuande Fameye Eshun, to him.

The Asantehene said it should not be lost on anybody that, women's empowerment through education would significantly aid the fight to reduce poverty and quicken the pace of the nation's socio-economic development.

He pledged his unwavering determination to rally the necessary support towards education development.

He praised the management and board of the school for the good job they were doing and urged the headmistress to work harder to sustain the high academic performance of the school.

Nana Gyamfi Nantwi, spokesperson for the board, lauded the Asantehene for assisting to upgrade facilities in the school.

The school, which used to be called Atwimaman Senior Secondary School, was re-named about 10 years ago.
