Asanteman Chiefs' wives association donate to Children's Home

Kumasi, Sept. 23, GNA- Lady Julia Osei-Tutu, wife of Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, Asantehene, at the weekend joined the Asanteman Chiefs' wives Association to donate assorted items to the inmates of the Kumasi Children's Home.

The items, worth GH¢4,000 were made up of a quantity of bread, ten bags of rice, five packets of Kalipo food drink, two bags of sugar, five cartons of milk, cooking oil, fifty plastic buckets and plates as well as a cash of GH¢500.

Making the presentation, Madam Georgina Kusi, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Hotel in Kumasi, who is the President of the Association, said the presentation was their widow's mite to the children, who needed the support of all to enable them enjoy life. She said the Association was formed in 1995 with the aim of assisting the needy in society who suffer in life through no fault of theirs. Mr Pascal Osei Twumasi, Ashanti Regional Director of Department of Social Welfare, who received the items, thanked the women for the package, which he said had come at the time its needed most. He said it was very unfortunate that some women did not have sympathy for children, to the extent that some even throw their own children away of maltreat them at home.

The Director challenged parents, especially women to make the proper upbringing of their children their priority, and urged the men to also support their wives.

Mr Twumasi said some men shirk their responsibilities, leading to delinquency in children as well as broken homes among others. He told the women to be bold and report all such cases to either the Department of Social Welfare or the Domestic Violence and Victims' Supporting Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service for redress, when they feel cheated.

Lady Julia Osei-Tutu, who is the life patron of the Association, called on the privileged in society, philanthropists, Religious Groups and other Non-Governmental Organisation to emulate the kind gesture of the women to assist the needy to live a better life. 23 Sept. 08
